BROONY - CAPTAIN. LEADER. LEGEND.

celtsmedia

14 years after joining Celtic from Hibs in 2007, Scott Brown will leave Celtic and join his former Hibs teammate Stephen Glass as assistant manager at Aberdeen. It’s a sad day for Celtic, an end of an era, as one of Celtic‘s greatest ever captain‘s departs the club and won’t get the ending he deserves with 60,000 Celtic supporters waving goodbye which is a real shame. However what is deserved is the praise he will get, a man not only leading the Hoops out for more than a decade, but a man with great integrity and professionalism which I’m sure he will take on into his new chapter in his life. Here in this article we dedicate one of Celtic‘s greatest ever heroes, Broony.

14 YEARS, 22 TROPHIES.

A man who wasn’t shy of winning a trophy, he was the captain and the driving force in one of Celtic’s most successful periods in their history, guiding us to an incredible 4 Trebles between 2016-2020. Scott Brown won 22 major honours at Celtic and will look to make it 23 in May when hopefully he can go and lift one final trophy for Celtic at Hampden in the Scottish Cup. A stellar 10 Scottish Premiership league titles, 6 Scottish Cup’s and 6 Scottish League Cup’s, Broony is one of Celtic‘s most decorated players, he is only three medals away from Bobby Lennox 25 trophies. If Scott Brown was a Scottish Football club he would be 3rd in the list, Aberdeen have only won 19 trophies, Hearts 16 and Hibs 10. He has more trophies than Kilmarnock, Dundee and Dundee United combined. The man is a winning machine.

HIS PEAK YEARS WERE HIS LAST.

Not only was Scott Brown familiar to a trophy or two, his individual achievements represent the player he was as well. Scott Brown has been in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year 6 times and between 2016-2019 he was in it for 3 years in a row. In 2017/2018, probably Scott’s best season in his career, he was congratulated with not only PFA Scotland‘s Players’ Player of the Year but SFWA Footballer of the Year as well. After the 2015/2016 Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers, many of us Celtic supporters quite rightly thought Scott Brown was finished at Celtic. However, when Brendan Rodgers arrived at Celtic Park in 2016, he built his team around Brown and for that 3 year spell of total domination, Scott was the heart and soul of it. He will be always remembered as the leader of the Celtic.

HIS BATTLES ON THE PITCH.

Broony’s style of play was loved by so many at Celtic, always leaving everything out on the field and having that mentality of not ever wanting to lose. His battles with fellow professionals over the years have been quite hilarious to watch, purely as he always came out on top nearly every single time. One of Brown‘s favourite moment’s in his career game at Ibrox in 2011 when he came head to head with El-Hadji Djouf. When Brown curled the ball past a helpless Allan McGregor, he outstretched his arms towards Djouf and it forever came known as the birth of the ‘Broony.‘ Other fierce rivalries with players included Steven Naismith, Mihael Kovacevic up in Dingwall where Broony just laughed him off, Craig Levien and others. Brown was always entertainment value and his character cannot be matched.

600 APPEARANCES - A CELTIC GREAT.

Over his 14 year period with the Hoops, Broony made over 600 appearances making him the 7th all time appearance holder at Celtic in our history. He is Celtic‘s most played player in Europe making a staggering 127 appearances in continental competitions surpassing Billy McNeill and Danny McGrain. Where Broony isn’t in the record books is for his goals \o/. He is and will always be a Celtic hero, for many of us younger fans, growing up he was the man, the one that led the team out week in week out but from next season he won’t be and to not give him a proper send off is heartbreaking. He will always be remembered for what he is, a Celtic LEGEND.
